Approximately EGP 5 trillion has been invested in Egypt’s electricity and renewable energy sector since 2014.
Renewable energy is targeted to account for 45% of electricity generation by 2028 under the national renewable energy strategy, alongside plans to expand battery storage and domestic manufacturing for the sector.
Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat said approximately EGP 5 trillion has been invested in electricity and renewable energy since 2014. The figures were reviewed during a meeting attended by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.
Discussions covered the progress of renewable energy projects and plans to expand battery energy storage systems, which are intended to allow a larger share of solar and wind generation to be integrated into the national grid while maintaining supply stability.
Officials also reviewed technical and financial support available from international institutions and companies for renewable energy projects.
President El-Sisi called for wider support for different partnership models, particularly projects that rely on locally manufactured equipment such as energy storage batteries. The meeting also covered efforts to localise industries connected to electricity and renewable energy.
Further directives included expanding domestic manufacturing linked to black sands and their value-added products, fertilisers and rare-earth elements.
