Egypt & Uganda Explore Joint Christian Pilgrimage Routes

Officials are considering itineraries linking Egypt’s Holy Family sites with Uganda’s annual Martyrs pilgrimage in Namugongo.

Egypt and Uganda are exploring ways to link their Christian pilgrimage routes, following a Uganda Tourism Board delegation visit to the Religious Complex in Old Cairo.

The visit included the Hanging Church and other historic Christian sites, alongside the historic synagogue and Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque, giving the delegation a look at how religious heritage is presented within one of Cairo’s most concentrated historic districts.

Discussions focused on the possibility of connecting Egypt’s Holy Family heritage with the Uganda Martyrs pilgrimage, which is commemorated every June 3rd in Namugongo and draws pilgrims from across Africa and beyond.

One option under consideration is to develop joint or extended itineraries, allowing visitors travelling to Uganda for the Martyrs commemorations to add Holy Family sites in Egypt to their trip, while pilgrims in Egypt could also be introduced to Uganda’s religious sites.

Any such programme would likely involve cooperation between tourism authorities, airlines, tour operators, churches and organisations involved in pilgrimage travel.

The visit also looked at how Egypt integrates religious landmarks into wider tourism programmes through preservation, interpretation, specialised guiding and itinerary development, while Uganda’s experience managing large annual pilgrimage crowds was highlighted as a complementary strength.
