Greece says Morocco’s autonomy proposal could be «most feasible solution» to Sahara dispute

Greece has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal, considering that it «constitutes a serious and credible contribution to the ongoing UN process» and «could constitute the most feasible solution» for a final settlement of the regional dispute.

The position was expressed by Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis following talks with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, who is visiting Athens.

Gerapetritis said that, in line with the European Union’s common position, Greece «fully supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to conduct negotiations, on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy proposal, with a view to reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution».

The Greek foreign minister also noted that Greece, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2025-2026, «welcomes the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797».

The position reinforces the support of EU member states for a settlement of the dispute based on the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty.
