After proceeding for about six miles down highway BR-251, the car’s driver attempted to overtake four vehicles in the opposite lane, which ultimately caused a head-on collision with a black GM Astra on the highway.

Also riding in the car with Alves at the time was 24-year-old Pedro Yan Linhares Gutierrez, who was driving the vehicle, and Ramon Silverio Nogueira, 19.

Both Gutierrez and Nogueira died at the scene. Another unnamed woman, 20, who was also riding in the car, was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Four other people riding in the car that Gutierrez hit were also pronounced dead at the scene, including 79-year-old Argemiro Machado da Silva, 76-year-old Valmir Machado da Silva, 77-year-old Alcides Silva Santos and 46-year-old Gilmar Bispo dos Santos.
