Morocco Braces for Heat, Dusty Winds, and Scattered Storms

Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) forecasts relatively hot to hot weather across the Southeast and inland areas of the Saharan provinces on Sunday.

Low clouds accompanied by fog or light drizzle are expected to develop over the Atlantic plains and Mediterranean coast during the morning and night.

The Oriental region, Middle Atlas, and its eastern slopes will experience partly cloudy skies, with a possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms in some areas.

Moderately strong wind gusts are also expected across the eastern highlands, Atlas Mountains, Southeast, and Saharan provinces. These winds could cause localized dust storms and reduced visibility.

Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius in the Southeast and far south of the country, while the Atlas and Rif regions will record cooler temperatures between 11 and 17°C. Temperatures elsewhere are forecast to range from 16 to 24°C.

The DGM expects minimum temperatures to decline slightly in the Southeast while rising slightly across the rest of the country.

At sea, conditions are expected to remain calm in the Mediterranean, while the Strait of Gibraltar will see calm to slightly rough seas. Atlantic waters are forecast to range from slightly rough to rough.

Morocco has experienced a succession of heatwaves in recent weeks, with temperatures climbing to particularly high levels across several regions and placing added strain on residents during the hottest hours of the day. 

The recurring episodes of extreme heat have also raised concerns over dehydration and other heat-related health risks, particularly among children, older adults, and people who work outdoors.

In light of the continued hot weather, citizens are advised to take precautions by avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities and strenuous physical exertion during peak heat hours, seeking cool or shaded areas, and drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
