Tetteh meets Saddam Haftar in Benghazi, calls for breaking Libya’s political deadlock

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, met Saddam Haftar in Benghazi today to discuss the latest political, economic and security developments in the country.

During the meeting, Tetteh praised what she described as the “constructive engagement” of Khalifa Haftar’s delegation in the mini-group discussions, which resulted in agreement on the first two steps of the UN-facilitated roadmap.

The two steps involve forming the board of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) and reaching agreement on the legal framework governing presidential and parliamentary elections, as part of efforts to advance Libya’s political process toward elections and end the current deadlock.

The UN envoy called on the authorities in eastern Libya to build on this momentum to break the political impasse and respond to the Libyan people’s aspirations for legitimate, accountable and unified institutions.

The two sides also stressed the importance of advancing national reconciliation while safeguarding the integrity of the necessary legal procedures and upholding the rule of law and respect for human rights.

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said the meeting addressed the country’s latest political, economic and security developments as part of UN efforts to support the political process and establish unified and legitimate Libyan institutions.
