Maersk strengthens Morocco logistics with Tangier-Casablanca rail service

Maersk is strengthening its logistics network in Morocco with a rail service connecting Tangier and Casablanca, offering an alternative route for cargo moving into the country’s main commercial and industrial hub.

The rail service is already operational, with regular departures between the two locations.

Maersk said the solution combines Tangier’s global maritime connectivity with Casablanca’s position as a major centre for Moroccan trade.

Rail link targets congestion and reliability

Casablanca remains one of Africa’s busiest maritime hubs. The port handled 17 million tonnes of cargo during the first half of 2026.

In June alone, throughput reached 3.53 million tonnes, representing a 32% year-on-year increase.

According to Maersk, Casablanca accounts for approximately 35% of Morocco’s total port traffic. However, growing volumes can also create congestion and limit operational flexibility.

The carrier’s approach positions Tangier as the primary maritime gateway, with cargo then moving by rail to Casablanca.

Regular rail departures and predictable transit times are designed to improve planning and inventory management.

Maersk offers end-to-end logistics option

The service extends beyond the rail connection.

Maersk can combine the ocean leg into Tangier with dedicated rail transportation to Casablanca. Customers can also access customs clearance, inland storage and final-mile truck delivery.

The carrier said this integrated approach provides customers with a single point of contact across the logistics journey.

The rail corridor can also support cargo flows between Morocco and Europe. In particular, it provides another transport option and reduces dependence on a single mode.

“What excites me most about this solution is that it addresses a challenge we hear from customers every day,” said Ruben Moratinos, Head of Sales Maghreb at Maersk.

“By bringing Tangier and Casablanca together, we’re creating a simpler way to move cargo into Morocco’s main commercial center,” he added.

According to Maersk, combining Tangier’s international connectivity with Casablanca’s industrial and commercial role can provide a more predictable and flexible supply chain solution as Moroccan cargo volumes continue to grow.
