Libya strengthens vaccine cold chain with over 1,700 refrigerators and solar power systems

Libya has strengthened its vaccine cold chain system through a series of measures implemented by the Ministry of Health in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) between 2023 and 2026.

The initiative aims to ensure the continuous and safe storage of vaccines while reducing the impact of electricity outages on vaccination services. As part of the efforts, 218 solar-powered refrigerators were installed at vaccination sites across several municipalities and regions. The refrigerators provide an independent power source, allowing vaccines to remain properly refrigerated during power cuts.

The initiative also provided 44 primary healthcare facilities with solar power systems to help maintain essential health services and reduce reliance on the electricity grid, particularly in areas affected by frequent power outages.
