Libya launches 1st phase of Western Border Security Project with advanced electronic surveillance system

Libya’s Ministry of Interior has announced the launch of the first phase of a project to secure the country’s western border as part of a broader plan to strengthen border security and protection. The initiative falls under the Border Guard’s 2026–2027 strategy and is being implemented in cooperation with the European Union Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM).

A field visit was conducted to Al-Assah border security sector to oversee the implementation of the project’s first phase and inspect the installation of an advanced optical and thermal surveillance system equipped with modern cameras and monitoring technologies.

The Ministry said the new system will provide round-the-clock surveillance of the border strip, day and night, significantly enhancing monitoring and early detection capabilities while improving the operational readiness of security forces to respond to various border challenges.

The project covers approximately 200 kilometers of Libya’s western border and is part of wider efforts to modernize the country’s electronic surveillance network and strengthen the Border Guard’s ability to monitor movements and secure border areas.

According to the Ministry, the project aims to reinforce security and stability along the western frontier while supporting efforts to combat smuggling, illegal migration, and transnational organized crime through the use of advanced technologies that improve the efficiency of border security operations.
