Liberia Unveils Five Priorities for UN Security Council

MONROVIA, Liberia, August 27, 2026 — Foreign Affairs Minister Sarah Beysolow Nyanti says Liberia will host a high-level diplomatic forum in September to showcase the country’s experience in women-led peacebuilding, strengthen international partnerships and advance its priorities on the United Nations Security Council.

The government will also use the forum to launch Liberia’s third-generation Women, Peace and Security National Action Plan.

Speaking Thursday, August 27, at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia, Minister Nyanti said September would be a pivotal month for Liberian diplomacy, with several high-level engagements planned to promote the country’s priorities and deepen international partnerships.

She said one of the major events will focus on Liberia’s experience with women-led peacebuilding during the country’s civil conflict and the contributions women made to restoring peace.

“Liberian women played a significant role in mobilizing for peace during the country’s civil conflict,” Nyanti said.

She noted that Liberia’s experience in advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda has gained international recognition, particularly through the country’s efforts to domesticate United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.

According to the Foreign Minister, the upcoming forum will highlight Liberia’s peacebuilding journey and the contributions of grassroots and traditional women to the peace process.

“This event is an opportunity for the international community to learn from Liberia’s experience,” she said. “Liberia must approach its Council membership not only as a student of global diplomacy, but as a teacher.”

“We should approach our role not only as a learner but also as a contributor of knowledge and experience to global peace and security efforts,” Nyanti added.

The Foreign Minister said Liberia’s transition from conflict to peace demonstrates the transformative role women can play in peacebuilding and provides lessons that could benefit other conflict-affected countries.

She stressed that Liberia’s peace was achieved through the collective efforts of women, youth and other segments of society.

Meanwhile, Minister Nyanti has outlined five priority areas that will guide Liberia’s tenure on the 15-member United Nations Security Council.

The priorities include international peace and security; the relationship between climate change and conflict; natural resource governance; ensuring that sub-regional concerns are reflected in Security Council resolutions and decisions; and advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda.

“Liberia’s five priorities on the Security Council will focus on international peace and security, the nexus between climate change and conflict, natural resource governance, ensuring sub-regional concerns are reflected in Council resolutions and decisions, and advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda,” Nyanti said.

She explained that although Liberia represents both its national interests and broader African concerns at the international level, the technical positions presented before the Security Council are developed in consultation with relevant government institutions and sectors.

Nyanti said the government intends to use Liberia’s Council membership to elevate women’s role in peacebuilding, highlight the security implications of climate change and ensure that African and sub-regional priorities receive greater international attention.

With Liberia expected to assume the presidency of the Security Council in December, the Foreign Minister said preparations are underway to ensure the country uses the opportunity to advance both national and African priorities.

She said Liberia intends to draw on its own journey from civil conflict to sustained peace to contribute meaningfully to international discussions on conflict prevention, peacebuilding and global security.
