IMF Financing to Egypt Reaches USD 25.3 Billion Since 2016

Egypt has repaid more than USD 16 billion in principal, while another USD 1.8 billion is expected following the next IMF review.

Financing provided by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to Egypt has reached USD 25.3 billion since the country’s first reform programme began in November 2016, according to Mohamed Maait, the IMF’s Executive Director representing the Arab group and the Maldives.

Speaking about Egypt’s financing arrangements with the fund, Maait said the total reflects disbursements made through June 30th, 2026 across several programmes. The largest was the USD 12 billion Extended Fund Facility agreed in 2016, followed by USD 2.8 billion in emergency financing during the COVID-19 pandemic and a USD 5.2 billion one-year economic reform programme launched in 2020.

Egypt’s current IMF programme was initially approved in 2022 at USD 3 billion, although implementation effectively began in 2024 after a pause. In March 2024, the programme was expanded to USD 8 billion. The country is also participating in the IMF’s Resilience and Sustainability Facility, through which it has access to an additional USD 1.3 billion.

According to Maait, the final review under the current arrangements is scheduled for November, after which Egypt is expected to receive a further USD 1.8 billion.

He added that Egypt has already repaid more than USD 16 billion in principal to the IMF, while all interest payments have been made on schedule. As of June 30th, 2026, the country’s outstanding obligations to the fund stood at less than USD 9.3 billion.

Maait also said Egypt’s latest expected disbursement increased from an earlier estimate of USD 1.64 billion to approximately USD 1.8 billion after the country met an additional reform target under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. That achievement raised Egypt’s allocation under the facility from USD 138 million to USD 277 million, bringing the total expected disbursement to around USD 1.776 billion.
