Following Morocco’s clarifications, Sahrawi detainee Asfari suspends his «hunger strike»

Naama Asfari has ended the «hunger strike» he claimed to have started on «June 8». His family announced this development on Friday. Asfari, a Sahrawi detainee, is serving a 30-year sentence for involvement in events associated with the dismantling of the Gdim Izik camp in Laâyoune in 2010.

In a phone call from Kenitra prison, Asfari informed his family that «the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) has initiated talks about the demands underlying his protest», according to Sahrawi media reports.

Asfari promised to «provide more information on this dialogue» with the DGAPR «once his health permits».

On Thursday, the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) noted in a statement that «on July 22, 2026, Naama Asfari consented to hospital transport, walking independently. Medical tests, including an electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, and blood tests, identified a potassium deficiency, which was corrected via infusion, along with an extra potassium supplement. The doctor affirmed his vital signs were stable and decided he should return to the prison.»

Asfari’s family also mentioned that he might be relocated to a prison closer to their home in Laâyoune.
