Boulos: US backs efforts to unify Libya’s institutions

US presidential adviser Masad Boulos says Washington is supporting Libyan efforts to unify the country’s economic, security and political institutions.

Speaking to US-funded Al-Hurra TV, Boulos said the US wanted to strengthen Libya’s security so that it could become a partner of Washington.

He said the details of any agreements on unifying state institutions were for Libyans to decide, while the US remained in contact with key actors to facilitate and encourage their efforts.

On the prospects for presidential and parliamentary elections, Boulos said Washington was committed to engaging with all Libyans to support a path towards lasting peace.

He said the US was working closely with UN envoy Hanna Tetteh and international partners to build on progress made so far.
