Ancient theatre discovered near Apollonia in Libya

Shahat Antiquities Authority has announced the discovery of a previously unknown ancient theatre near the historic city of Apollonia.

The find, located outside the city’s archaeological walls, was made by a French archaeological mission during ongoing fieldwork, according to the Shahat Antiquities Authority.

Researchers say excavation and analysis are continuing to determine the structure’s precise date, architectural phases and its role in the city’s development over time.

Preliminary findings suggest that the uncovered layers contain limited artefacts, meaning it is too early to draw firm conclusions about when the theatre was built or how it was used.

Officials described the discovery as a significant addition to Apollonia’s archaeological landscape, highlighting the site’s continuing potential to reveal further historical remains and reinforcing its status as one of Libya’s most important ancient coastal cities.
