Weah Confirms Re-Election Bid for Liberian Presidency
Former President George Weah has put to rest speculation about his political future, declaring over the weekend that he will seek re-election in Liberia’s 2029 presidential election. Weah made the announcement at a gathering of Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) supporters in the United States.
“Families are struggling to eat. Businesses are collapsing under the weight of a bad economy and high taxes. And the Liberian people’s confidence in their own institutions has been broken,” Weah said, accusing the Boakai administration of reversing the democratic gains made during his presidency.
Analysts say the announcement effectively signals the start of the presidential race more than three years early. They note that unlike his successful 2017 bid, Weah enters this contest as a former head of state with an established track record – and against an incumbent president who is no longer an untested challenger.
