US Seeks Sudan-Wide UN Arms Embargo

According to Allafrica, the United States has proposed extending the United Nations arms embargo for Darfur to all of Sudan. US Envoy Massad Boulos presented the proposal during a UN Security Council meeting in New York.

Boulos said the proposed expansion would apply geographically across Sudan and materially to unmanned aerial vehicles and related technologies. The plan would also increase the number of experts monitoring the embargo.

He said the war waged by the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces had undermined their claims to legitimate governance, and warned that external financial and military support was fueling the conflict and could draw neighboring states deeper into the war.

The Darfur embargo has been in place for two decades and is due to expire on September 12, 2026, unless it is amended or renewed. Any expansion would require approval by the Security Council. Sudan’s UN envoy, Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed, called for a “technical extension” of the existing measure, warning that wider sanctions could weaken civilian protection by hampering the army.

Russia, which has veto power on the council, has expressed skepticism, saying an expanded embargo could affect the Sudanese army’s effectiveness. UN officials also cited sophisticated weaponry, external support, drone use and localized ground fighting as signs of the conflict’s growing complexity. The war, now in its fourth year, has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.
