UNSMIL gives HoR and HCS one month to approve “4+4” agreement

The Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Hanna Tetteh, said the mission has given the House of Representatives and the High Council of State one month to approve the agreement reached by the “4+4” dialogue committee.

Tetteh told Al Jazeera that the mission had sent the agreement to both councils, noting that several political parties had responded positively and considered the agreement a positive step.

She added that the mission had not received a response from the High Council of State regarding the agreement, amid opposition from its president, noting that UNSMIL could resort to alternative mechanisms if the signatories are unable to implement it.

The Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Political Affairs Stephanie Koury said the agreement had been sent to the leaderships of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, which have one month from the date of its signing to approve it.

The “4+4” committee had signed the agreement on a roadmap for holding elections, in a move UNSMIL said was aimed at advancing the political process toward elections and breaking the current political deadlock.
