Uganda: Regulator Announces New Radio Frequency Opportunities

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has opened applications for radio broadcasting frequencies in eight districts as part of its efforts to promote the efficient and fair use of Uganda’s radio frequency spectrum.

The districts covered are Maracha, Gulu, Kitgum, Abim, Kaabong, Kotido, Hoima and Kisoro.

The move is expected to expand access to radio services, particularly in areas that remain underserved. It will also create more opportunities for local content, community participation and programming that reflects the social, cultural and economic needs of people in these areas.

UCC said it will assess applications competitively, with the strongest application for each location considered for frequency reservation.

To qualify, applicants must be eligible to obtain an FM broadcasting licence and must not already have an FM frequency authorisation or reservation in the area they are applying for. They must also show that they have the technical, financial and operational capacity to establish and maintain a radio station.

Applicants will need to explain how their proposed station will meet the information needs of the local community, involve local people and support the development priorities of the area.

The opportunity also highlights the wider role UCC plays in managing Uganda’s radio frequency spectrum. As a limited national resource, the spectrum must be carefully managed to ensure it is used efficiently and supports broadcasting, public communication, and broader national development.

Successful applicants will initially receive a provisional spectrum reservation. They must then secure the necessary broadcasting licence and frequency authorisation within 60 calendar days. They must also put the assigned frequency into operation within 12 months.
