Sheikh Essa Darboe re-elected GSIC president
Sheikh Alhagie Essa Foday Darboe has been re-elected as President of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC) for a second five-year term, following the Council’s Sixth National Congress held at its headquarters.
Delegates from across the country unanimously endorsed Sheikh Darboe’s leadership, reaffirming his role at the helm of the nation’s highest Islamic body. In his acceptance remarks, Sheikh Darboe reminded members that leadership is a trust and not a permanent entitlement, emphasizing the Council’s constitutional requirement for renewal every five years.
The re-election marks a continuation of Sheikh Darboe’s stewardship in guiding Islamic affairs in The Gambia. Under his leadership, the Council has sought to strengthen unity among Gambian Muslims, promote religious education, and uphold Islamic values in national life.
Observers note that his renewed mandate comes at a time when the Council faces growing responsibilities in addressing contemporary challenges, including youth engagement, religious tolerance, and the role of faith in national development.
The Congress also served as a platform for delegates to discuss the Council’s future priorities, with calls for greater collaboration between religious leaders and government institutions.
Sheikh Darboe’s second term is expected to consolidate the Council’s influence as a moral compass for Gambian society, while reinforcing its position as a unifying voice for the Muslim community.
Ebrima Sisawo, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs, said religious institutions have a key role in shaping character and strengthening the moral foundations of society as Gambian institutions are being tested and rebuilt.
“While the government can build roads, schools, and other infrastructure and develop public policies, religious institutions have an equally important responsibility: helping shape character and strengthen the moral foundations of society,” Mr. Sisawo stated.
