Lesotho Accelerates AI Roadmap And Digital Infrastructure Plans

Lesotho is moving ahead with plans to develop a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy and a Data Centre Blueprint as the country looks to strengthen its digital infrastructure.

The government, working with the United Nations, is holding a five-day workshop in Maseru to shape the direction of both initiatives. The AI strategy will set out a framework for adopting and using the technology. At the same time, the data centre blueprint will guide the development of secure and resilient infrastructure to meet the country’s growing digital needs.

Deputy Prime Minister Justice Nthomeng Majara said Lesotho needs to approach the development of these frameworks carefully and with a clear understanding of the opportunities and risks involved.
While the country needs to keep pace with rapid developments in technology, Majara said it should also build on its existing capabilities rather than rush into AI adoption without the right safeguards and resources.

She stressed the importance of protecting Lesotho’s digital infrastructure, strengthening policy and developing the skills needed to respond effectively as new technologies emerge.
The work comes alongside efforts by the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI) to strengthen the country’s wider digital policy framework.

According to ICT Minister Nthati Moorosi, more than 100 stakeholders recently took part in a process to validate three key national policies covering AI, data management, and broadband and shared infrastructure.
The three policies are expected to provide a foundation for Lesotho’s digital transformation plans, covering how emerging technologies are used, how data is managed and how critical digital infrastructure can be shared.

The government sees technology, data and innovation as important tools for improving public services, strengthening connectivity and supporting economic and social development.
MICSTI said it will continue working with local stakeholders and development partners, including the UN in Lesotho, to strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem.

The ministry said the focus will be on ensuring that new technologies are adopted in a way that is secure, inclusive and aligned with Lesotho’s wider development priorities.

For Lesotho, the push towards an AI strategy and stronger data infrastructure reflects a broader effort to prepare the country for an increasingly digital economy. The challenge will be ensuring that investment in AI is matched by the policies, infrastructure, skills and safeguards needed to make the technology work effectively for the country.
