Limpopo club Phalaborwa United has been expelled from all SAFA competitions after an assault on a referee during a Nedbank Cup match last month — a incident that has now resulted in severe sanctions.
Soccer Laduma is in possession of a ruling by the South African Football Association (SAFA) Limpopo following a disciplinary hearing on 25 and 26 September.

The Incident
The Nedbank Cup qualifier between Vondwe XI Bullets and Phalaborwa United was played at the Makhado Show Ground in Limpopo. The match was marred by an incident towards the end when Vondwe was awarded a penalty in the 87th minute with the score goalless — prompting a furious reaction from the Phalaborwa camp.
SAFA Limpopo Delivers Verdict
SAFA Limpopo has now delivered its verdict on case number ABC2627001, finding the club guilty on multiple charges.
“The respondent (Phalaborwa United) contravened rule 24.2.12.1 and rule 24.2.12.2 and rule 24.2.12.3 and 24.2.12.7 in that on or about 19th September 2026, Phalaborwa United players and spectators wearing Phalaborwa t-shirts assaulted match official (Orifha Matshavha) during their game against Vondwe XI Bullets,” the ruling stated.
“Furthermore, Phalaborwa FC is accused of causing the abandonment of a match, and it is also alleged that its supporters have thrown missiles, bottles, cans, and other objects towards the referee, and such constitutes acts of misconduct/offenses as stipulated by SAFA Competition Uniform rules.”
Two-Year Expulsion and Fine
“Phalaborwa United FC is expelled from all SAFA LEAGUE COMPETITIONS for a period of two years.”
Phalaborwa United has also been fined R20,000, with R10,000 suspended — meaning the club must pay R10,000 within seven days to avoid paying the full amount.
This publication contacted Phalaborwa United, and though no response was received at the time of publishing, sources close to the club have confirmed they would file an appeal.
