Vusi focused on taking charge, not Leinster

Vusi Moyo says the Sharks are ready to tackle the defending URC champions on Saturday, as the young playmaker embraces a test that will gauge how far he has come.

The 20-year-old flyhalf has moved quickly from school rugby to the Junior Springboks, the Sharks and, this year, the Springboks. He starts again this week at Kings Park, with inside centre André Esterhuizen returning outside him.

“For me this week, it’s just taking ownership and just taking confidence in what the coaches have prepped during the week,” Moyo said on Thursday.

“André was next to me on my debut for the Sharks and having him back, it’s very exciting.”

Moyo’s first senior start came against Zebre in May, when he scored a try and kicked five conversions in a 54-19 victory. He then made his Test debut against Wales at Kings Park in July.

Last week, he opened the Sharks’ URC campaign against the Ospreys with 14 points, kicking four conversions and two penalties in a 41-24 win. The Durbanites scored five tries and earned a bonus point.

Leinster presents a challenge, but Moyo does not want the opposition’s reputation to dictate his approach.

“We’re not really focused on what Leinster can do but on what we can achieve,” he said.

“We’ve set a lot of standards for ourselves as the Sharks, and we want to meet those standards.”

He credits the competition within the squad, with Jordan Hendrikse and Siya Masuku continuing to help him even when they are not selected.

“And with coach JP [Pietersen] selecting me this weekend, it does show a lot of faith and trust,” Moyo added.

“My job is organising the forwards and backs to go forward. It’s myself taking ownership and knowing my details.”
