The death toll from the ferry capsizing in Zimbabwe has risen to 80
The death toll from the capsizing of a passenger ferry on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has risen to 80. On Sunday, August 16, rescue workers recovered eight more bodies from the water, France 24 reports, citing police.
The ferry, operated by Zimbabwe’s state-run Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), capsized on Tuesday in rough waters. The accident occurred on Lake Kariba, located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The day before, search teams had recovered 25 bodies, bringing the death toll to 72. The search operation is ongoing, and authorities fear the death toll may rise.

According to officials, the boat was designed to carry 90 people, but there were 114 adults, five crew members, and an unknown number of children on board. On Wednesday, the civil defense unit reported that 77 people had been rescued.
Most of the passengers were villagers and fishmongers from the areas surrounding the lake, particularly from the Chalala fishing camp. Hundreds of people gathered near the district hospital in Kariba to identify the bodies of their relatives and loved ones. The ferry served as a vital transportation link between the rural communities around the lake and the city of Kariba, located approximately 280 kilometers northwest of the capital, Harare.
