Syria’s Embassy in Libya Reopens After 14-Year Closure

Syria reopened its embassy in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, on Sunday after a 14-year closure, marking a renewed effort to restore diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The reopening followed talks between Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah, Acting Foreign Minister Taher al-Baour and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani in Tripoli.

They also agreed to expand cooperation and revive the Libyan-Syrian Joint Higher Committee, in what Dbeibah called “a new chapter” in relations between the two countries.

The Libyan-Syrian Joint Higher Committee serves as a bilateral cooperation framework whose aim is to improve political and economic relations between both nations. It operates across many fields and coordinates joint efforts at the governmental level.

Following the successful talks, al-Shibani officially inaugurated the embassy Sunday.
