Hargeisa (HOL) — Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro departed Thursday for an official working visit to the United States, traveling via the United Arab Emirates, the Somaliland presidency said.
The trip is Irro’s first visit to the United States since becoming president.
According to the presidency, the visit is aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations, security and economic cooperation, encouraging investment and advancing Somaliland’s international identity.
“During his trip, the president will hold meetings with key officials and parties, conveying the voice, interests and aspirations of the people of Somaliland,” the presidency said in a statement posted on Facebook.
The statement said the trip demonstrates that Somaliland is engaging with the world with confidence, responsibility and a national vision.
“This trip demonstrates that Somaliland is engaging with the world with trust, responsibility and a national vision, and is ready for strategic cooperation based on mutual interests,” the statement said.
Irro’s visit comes as Somaliland continues diplomatic efforts to seek international recognition and strengthen relations with countries and international organizations.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not received broad international recognition.
