Somalia shares climate finance experience at Brazil inter-regional meeting

Salvador, Brazil (HOL) — The Executive Director of the National Climate Fund (NCF), Liban Obsiye, attended the 2nd Inter-Regional Exchange of Ministries of Finance for Climate in Salvador, Brazil in this week.

The three-day meeting focused on opportunities and challenges in mobilizing national climate finance, bringing together finance officials and climate finance experts from Africa and Latin America to discuss climate finance.

Participants discussed the effectiveness of national, regional and international financial instruments, including domestic revenue, public-private partnerships, disaster risk financing, insurance, diaspora bonds and debt.

Officials also presented different national climate finance structures and discussed how they are being implemented in their respective countries.

Obsiye said the meeting gave Somalia an opportunity to share its experience as a country on the front line of the climate crisis.

“As a country at the forefront of the climate crisis, I had the opportunity to share some of Somalia’s climate finance successes and challenges, and its experience of making the case for how financing can be most effectively deployed in more fragile countries,” Obsiye said.

He said Somalia is adopting a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to climate finance, while using innovation and experimentation to strengthen resilience, protect people and livelihoods, and support a transition to a more sustainable future.

The 2nd Inter-Regional Exchange was organized by the French Development Agency, Brazil’s Ministry of Finance, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Institute for Climate Economics.
