Senegal have parted ways with head coach Pape Thiaw following their Round-of-32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Senegal Football Federation announced his departure, bringing to an end a tumultuous tenure that started in December 2024.
Thiaw reportedly did not have a contract during the World Cup in North America, despite negotiations beginning in February while Senegal star Pape Gueye announced he would not play for the national team as long as the 45-year-old was in charge following the country’s painful exit at the hands of Belgium.
Senegal were leading 2-0 with five minutes remaining before their capitulation in Seattle on July 2.
Thiaw also led Senegal to the 2025 AFCON final before they were sensationally stripped of the title.
“The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) informs the public that following the meeting of the Executive Committee held this Saturday July 11 2026, it was decided to initiate a procedure to terminate the functions of the national coach, Mr Pape Thiaw, as well as his entire technical staff,” a statement read.
“This decision comes after the elimination of the Senegal national team in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“After a thorough evaluation of the sporting results and prospects of the national team, the Executive Committee deemed it necessary to initiate this procedure in the best interests of Senegalese football.”
Arsenal and France legend Patrick Vieira is reportedly a frontrunner to replace Thiaw.
Vieira, who has previously coached New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg, was last in charge of Genoa in 2024-25.
