South African athletes swept the senior 1500m podium, three ASA Senior records tumbled in the senior women’s 300m, and visiting USA sprinter Cambrea Sturgis powered to two record-breaking 100m runs as the SuperSport Simbine Classic Continental Tour Silver opened with a strong women’s programme at the Pilditch Athletics Stadium in Pretoria on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.
The records column told the story of the day. Sturgis broke the ASA Senior 100m mark twice, first clocking 10.94 in heat two of the senior women’s 100m, then improving to 10.92 to take gold in the final, with the wind on this occasion staying within record-eligible limits.
The senior women’s 300m proved even more remarkable, with the top three athletes all dipping under the previous ASA Senior mark. Mercy Oketch of Kenya led the way in 35.77 to take gold, with USA’s Kenondra Davis securing silver in 35.81 and South Africa’s Marli Viljoen claiming bronze in a national best of 36.30.
International victors also lit up several flagship sprints and field events. Sturgis’s 100m gold capped a strong American showing on the straight, with Maia McCoy taking silver in 11.16 and Chante Clinkscale finishing third in 11.20 to complete an American podium sweep, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Leah Bertrand in fourth in 11.21.
In the senior women’s 100m hurdles, Rayniah Jones of the USA held off Hungary’s Luca Kozak to win in 12.72, with South Africa’s Tumi Ramokgopa close behind for bronze in 12.96. In the field, Croatia’s Sara Kolak threw 59.23 to win the senior women’s javelin gold, well clear of South Africa’s Jana van Schalkwyk in second with 54.77 and Great Britain’s Freya Jones in third with 52.51.
The South African contingent answered loudest in the middle distances and on the relay track. Prudence Sekgodiso produced a class run to win the senior women’s 1500m in 4:08.93, leading home a clean South African podium with Karabo More second in 4:11.90 and Carina Viljoen third in 4:17.02. Andrea Steynberg followed in fourth, Carina Swiegers fifth, Paballo Radebe sixth, Chemene Mentz seventh, and Tinyiko Ndala eighth, completing an entirely South African field of eight.
