The French champions went with the same team that started both legs against Liverpool in the quarter-final, while Bayern recalled Alphonso Davies at left-back for his first start in the Champions League this season.

The game was played at a lively pace in the early stages of the first half but it was Bayern who broke the deadlock on 15 minutes after being awarded a penalty for Willian Pacho’s foul Luis Diaz. Harry Kane stepped up and calmly converted for his 54th goal in all competitions this campaign.

Bayern’s joy did not last too long as PSG drew themselves level in the 21st minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia latched onto a ball over the top by Desire Doue and surged towards goal before curling one into the far corner.

The end-to-end affair showed no signs of slowing down as Luis Enrique’s men completed the turnaround on 33 minutes when Joao Neves found the back of the net by nodding home a corner from Ousmane Dembele.

The visitors were not to be outdone as the lively Michael Olise brought Bayern level five minutes before the halftime break with a wonderful run and finish on the edge of the box, leaving goalkeeper Matvey Safonov with no chance.

However, there was some late drama in the first half when PSG were awarded a penalty of their following intervention from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for a handball on Davies. Dembele took responsibility and sent his spot-kick to the far corner.

The hosts carried their momentum into the second half and added a fourth goal ten minutes in when Achraf Hakimi raced down the right flank before sending a cross into the box that found Kvaratskhelia, who sent a first-time finish past Neuer.

Bayern had no answer for the French side, who extended their lead once again on 58 minutes when Dembele got his second goal on the night with a clinical finish in the box after lost the ball in their own half to Doue.

However, the Bavarians gave themselves some hope when Dayot Upamecano nodded home from Joshua Kimmich’s free-kick to reduce the deficit, before Luis Diaz brought Bayern to within one goal with a superb individual effort in the 70th minute.

Both sides went in search for more goals in the latter periods of the first half, but Senny Mayulu went the closest for the home side in the final three minutes when he rattled the crossbar from close range as the defending champions head to Munich with a slender lead.
