Pope Leo XIV calls for Ebola containment in DR Congo
Pope Leo XIV called on the international community to step up efforts to contain the spread of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. After the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, he said that the epidemic is claiming many lives.
Call to the international community
The pontiff stressed that local communities must also be involved in the international response to the outbreak in order to save as many people as possible. Channel NewsAsia reported on his appeal.
According to the outlet, healthcare workers are warning of the virus spreading exponentially. The deadliest Ebola outbreak in the history of the DR Congo has already claimed thousands of lives. It has affected areas in the north and east of the country, where the state presence is weak, medical infrastructure is largely absent, and armed groups have been spreading violence for decades.

Condolences for victims of tragedies
Leo XIV also expressed condolences to residents of the Central African Republic mourning those killed in a mine collapse in Zamboye. The landslide at a gold mine near the border with Cameroon occurred on Tuesday: dozens of people were killed, while many others are missing and are likely still trapped under the rubble.
In addition, the Pope recalled the 10th anniversary of the major earthquake in central Italy, which claimed about 300 lives and destroyed the city of Amatrice.
