Angola will be hoping to make history when they compete at the TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations | COSAFA Qualifier Mauritius 2026 from September 18-27, seeking to win the regional title for the first time in their history.
They have been drawn in a tough Group B alongside defending champions and reigning African champions South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini. The top team in each of the three pools, along with the best runner-up, will advance to the semi-finals, with the two finalists qualifying for the TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations Ghana 2027.
Angola have reached the semi-finals in nine of the previous 10 editions, but advanced to the final only once in that time, an extraordinary record of consistency that has not yet brought them the coveted trophy.
They lost three finals in a row between 2000 and 2002, and then again in 2011 in a 2-1 defeat to Zambia. Only five nations have ever lifted the COSAFA Under-20 title – Zambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Mozambique – leaving Angola as perhaps the most notable absentee from the roll of honour.
Angola finished third again in 2013 before taking fourth place in 2016. They then disappointed by their own high standards in 2017 when they picked up just a single point from their three games to finish bottom of Group C.
They finished third in 2018, reaching the semi-finals as runners-up in Group C, but then lost 1-0 to eventual winners South Africa in the last four.
The team claimed the bronze medal, though, with a 2-1 success over hosts Zambia.
It would be a repeat in 2019 as they waltzed through their group with three wins, including an 8-0 victory over Seychelles, but lost 3-0 to Zambia in the semi-finals. The consolation was a 5-1 victory over Madagascar in the bronze-medal match.
A now-familiar refrain continued in 2020 as they edged through the group stages on head-to-head after a loss to Eswatini (0-1) and victory over Botswana (4-0) in a three-team pool.
They lost 1-0 in the semi-finals to Namibia, but then beat Zambia 2-1 to claim yet another bronze medal.
They were back in the semi-finals in 2022, but this time lost on penalties to Zambia and then again to South Africa in the bronze-medal match.
Angola reached the last four again in Mozambique in 2024 but were edged out 1-0 by South Africa as they fell just short once more.
They were in the semi-finals once more in 2025, but lost 2-0 to eventual winners South Africa and were then edged 5-4 on penalties by Zambia in the bronze-medal match after a 1-1 draw.
Angola have always been known as fine producers of young talent, many of whom make their way to Portugal and other parts of Europe.
They have appeared at the finals of the African Under-20 Championship on six previous occasions and were champions in 2001 when they defeated Ghana 2-0 in the final in Ethiopia.
That team included the likes of Gilberto and Mantorras, who would go on to have stellar senior careers.
Their other five appearances at the continental showpiece were less successful, all ending before the knockout stages. Their last appearance was all the way back in 2005, meaning reaching the final in Mauritius would not only put them within one victory of a maiden COSAFA crown, but also end a 22-year absence from the continental finals in 2027.
