Maritime piracy near the Horn of Africa has climbed to its most frequent level in over a decade, based on an AFP review of International Maritime Organisation data. Since January, at least 15 incidents have been logged in the IMO’s Global Integrated Shipping Information System.

That database tracks events from 1994 onward across the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean up to 2,000 kilometres off Somalia‘s coast. Between 2013 and 2025, the area typically saw only a few attacks per year, with five recorded in 2025. In 2026, however, the number has risen sharply, especially in the Gulf of Aden, the waterway between Somalia and Yemen that connects the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean. Eight attacks have been reported there since May.

The zone, which carries some of the world’s heaviest maritime traffic, has faced major disruptions since the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel started on 28 February, which has also affected vessels transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The most significant incident this year occurred on 21 April, when roughly 30 pirates, armed with assault rifles and grenade launchers, seized the oil tanker Honour 25 north of Eyl, a former fishing village in Puntland that has grown into a key Somali piracy hub. The attackers took 17 crew members hostage and continue to hold the 90-metre ship.

Even with this uptick, 2026’s totals remain well below the peak seen in 2011, when the IMO documented about 200 attacks on vessels in the region, matching figures from the two preceding years.
