New Caledonia suffer another big loss at FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup
Oceania representatives New Caledonia have lost their third group game at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, going down 10-1 to a ruthless Nigeria.
After finishing bottom of Group F, the New Caledonians will head home from Poland, after conceding 26 goals in their three matches.
Oceania’s other team, New Zealand, are also out of the tournament after losing their three matches in Group D.
Playing at Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź, Nigeria dominated from the kick-off and made the breakthrough when Tosin Rafiu tricked her way past three opponents to win a penalty, and Ramotalahi Kareem stroked it home.
Headers from Rebecca Adegbemile and Seimeyeha Akekoromowei amplified the advantage, before Kareem added a fourth following more excellent play from Rafiu.
After the restart, Kareem sealed her hat-trick, Winner Onajite David bagged a treble of her own, Adegbemile completed her brace and Rafiu scored a beauty from outside the box.
There was, however, consolation joy for New Caledonia as Joceline Kourevi got their first goal of these finals with a superb strike from distance.
Kourevi was upbeat about New Caledonia’s participation, despite the scores.
“This is a source of great pride for the country,” she said after the match.
“I’m very proud too, because it’s a first for me. It’s the first time we’ve been in the World Cup, and we’re a small country as well. We’ve managed to qualify for this World Cup, so it’s just a source of great pride for the country too.”

The match stats showed the extent of Nigeria’s dominance, with the Africans managing 48 attempts on goal, of which 22 were on target, and forcing 19 corners.
New Caledonia had four goal attempts, with two on target, and had no corners during the match.
