Nearly 100,000 displaced in Sudan’s Blue Nile state — IOM
In Sudan’s southeastern Blue Nile state, nearly 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes since the beginning of the year amid intensified fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Anadolu Agency reported the data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Scale of displacement
According to IOM estimates, 99,277 people, including 19,497 families, were displaced from different areas of Blue Nile state between January 11 and August 23, 2026. This is 66% higher than in the organization’s previous update of May 21, which recorded 59,742 displaced people.
Children under the age of 18 account for 47% of all displaced people. A total of 39,570 people were displaced from Geissan, 32,515 from Kurmuk, and 27,192 from Bau.

Accommodation locations
Displaced people arrived at seven locations within Blue Nile state. Damazin received 45,740 people, while another 15,735 people arrived in Geissan.
According to IOM, 58% of displaced people are staying in informal gathering sites. Another 9% are living with host families, while 33% have found shelter in schools and other public buildings.
According to the agency, fighting in the state has intensified in recent days amid attacks by the RSF and its ally, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North. The armed confrontation between the army and the RSF has continued in Sudan since April 2023. According to UN and international organization estimates, the conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced around 13 million people.
