Austria announced Friday that it had “encouraging news” about the ongoing case of an Austrian woman, Eva G, who was taken hostage in Niger. The release, however, is not yet complete, the Austrian foreign ministry reported. Eva G, in her 70s, was abducted in the desert town of Agadez, central Niger, in January 2025.
The complex geopolitical landscape in Niger and surrounding countries, marked by a jihadist insurgency linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State, compounds efforts to secure her release. This insurgency, growing since a Tuareg rebellion in northern Mali in 2012, has resulted in extensive violence and instability across the Sahel region.
In a separate development, Switzerland is verifying reports of the release of a Swiss woman, also kidnapped in Niger in April 2025. The Swiss foreign ministry stated it is awaiting confirmation before providing further comments. Kidnappings in Niger have reportedly intensified, highlighting the perilous security situation in the area.
