Morocco’s OCP, US cooperative CHS plan $450 million fertiliser plant

RABAT – OCP North America, a subsidiary of Moroccan phosphate producer OCP Group, and CHS, a US farmer-owned cooperative, plan to form a joint venture to build a phosphate fertiliser plant in Louisiana with an investment of up to $450 million.

The plant, to be located at the Cornerstone Energy Park in Waggaman, would be the first of its kind built in the United States since 1984, according to a statement from OCP on Wednesday.

It is expected to produce more than 1 million metric tons of phosphate-based fertiliser annually, adding to US production capacity as the country seeks to strengthen supply.

OCP Group would supply phosphoric acid to the facility, while finished products would be distributed through both OCP North America and CHS.

The planned investment comes after US President Donald Trump in June authorised a temporary suspension of certain duties on phosphate fertiliser imported from Morocco to help offset supply disruptions linked to the Iran war.

The Louisiana project would deepen the relationship between OCP and the US agricultural sector, with the joint venture combining OCP’s phosphate production with CHS’s farmer-owned distribution network.

OCP is the world’s largest producer of phosphate-based fertilisers. It has expanded its production capacity to 16 million metric tons in 2025 from 3 million metric tons in 2008.
