Morocco steps up Arab League role with media committee win

CAIRO – Morocco was elected on Monday to the presidency of the Permanent Information Committee of the League of Arab States, giving Rabat a leading role in coordinating media cooperation among Arab countries.

The election took place in Cairo on the sidelines of the 166th regular session of the Council of the League of Arab States at ministerial level.

Morocco will be represented on the committee by Moustapha Amdjar, director of Relations with Media Actors at the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication’s Department of Communication. Amdjar was elected by acclamation, according to Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP).

The appointment reflects the position Morocco has built within Arab League institutions and gives it responsibility for a key forum dealing with information and media coordination among member states.

It also follows a decision by the Arab Information Ministers Council in November to designate Rabat as the Arab Media Capital for 2026, further raising Morocco’s profile in Arab media cooperation.

The 166th session of the Arab League Council opened on Monday at the organisation’s headquarters in Cairo, with a Moroccan delegation headed by Mohamed Ait Ouali, Morocco’s ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative to the Arab League.

The ministerial meeting is addressing a broad agenda spanning political, economic, social, cultural and legal issues, with the war in Gaza and what the Arab League describes as illegitimate Iranian attacks on Arab countries among the key issues under discussion.

The session also includes elections and appointments to a number of the league’s permanent bodies, including the Human Rights Committee, Meteorology Committee, Permanent Information Committee and Committee on International Humanitarian Law.

Morocco also secured a position within the Arab League’s judicial institutions, with Fatima Tazi, an adviser to Morocco’s Court of Cassation, elected as a member of the Administrative Tribunal of the League of Arab States.

Morocco’s election to lead the Permanent Information Committee comes as Arab states seek to strengthen coordination across media institutions and develop common approaches to regional issues.
