Morocco gains Maersk rail link between Tangier, Casablanca

TANGIER, Morocco (MNTV) — Maersk has introduced a rail freight service between Tangier and Casablanca, expanding its logistics network in Morocco and providing shippers with an alternative route into the country’s principal commercial and industrial center, according to Container News.

The service, which is already operating with regular departures, uses Tangier as the main maritime entry point before moving containers by rail to Casablanca, linking the city’s international shipping connections with Morocco’s largest trade market.

Casablanca’s port handled 17 million tonnes of cargo during the first half of 2026, including 3.53 million tonnes in June, when volumes rose 32 percent from a year earlier, according to figures cited by Maersk.

The company said Casablanca represents about 35 percent of Morocco’s overall port traffic, although rising cargo activity has increased pressure on capacity and reduced flexibility for supply-chain operators.

In addition to rail transportation, Maersk can combine ocean shipping into Tangier with customs processing, warehousing and final truck delivery in Casablanca, allowing customers to coordinate the full movement of cargo through a single provider.

The corridor is also expected to offer an additional transport option for trade between Morocco and Europe, while reducing reliance on a single mode of freight movement.

Ruben Moratinos, Maersk’s head of sales for the Maghreb, said the service was developed to provide customers with a more straightforward and dependable way of moving shipments into Casablanca as Moroccan cargo volumes continue to increase.
