Morocco Deploys First AI-Powered Police Patrol Vehicles in Rabat

• Morocco has deployed its first AI-integrated police patrol vehicles, “Amane” and “Madar,” in Rabat, with expansion planned for Casablanca, Tangier and other major cities.

Morocco has deployed artificial intelligence (AI) in police patrol operations. The country’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has placed its smart patrol vehicles, Amane and Madar, into active service in Rabat after unveiling them during the agency’s Open Days in May. Authorities plan to extend the deployment to Casablanca and Tangier before gradually expanding the system to the kingdom’s other major cities.

The DGSN’s technical and engineering teams developed both mobile platforms to strengthen surveillance and operational response through AI-powered technologies. Amane combines wide-angle cameras, 360-degree imaging, automated license plate recognition and facial recognition capabilities.

The vehicle also deploys an integrated drone to extend ground surveillance. According to Morocco’s General Secretariat of the Government, the system identifies stolen or suspicious vehicle license plates in real time with accuracy of up to 95%.

Meanwhile, Madar converts a conventional police vehicle into a mobile surveillance platform. The system integrates high-definition cameras, including a rapidly rotating panoramic camera, while sharing several AI-based functions with Amane, such as facial recognition, automated license plate reading and geolocated alert generation. The platform centralizes collected data through the integrated Smart.VIEWER surveillance system, which provides operational dashboards and delivers real-time alerts to security teams.

The operational rollout comes only a few months after the public unveiling of both vehicles. During the DGSN Open Days held in Rabat in May, the agency presented the platforms as a new generation of mobile surveillance solutions designed to support patrols in monitoring, analysis and rapid response missions. Their deployment into active service marks a new phase in the integration of internally developed technologies into the day-to-day operations of Morocco’s security forces.

Beyond the deployment of the vehicles themselves, the initiative underscores the growing role of artificial intelligence in modernizing Morocco’s security services. The systems automate parts of the identification process and rapidly transmit information to command centers and deployed units, which should improve patrol responsiveness and operational coordination.

Moreover, the planned expansion across the country’s major cities will provide a broader assessment of the technology’s effectiveness in traffic management, public-space surveillance and crime prevention.
