Morocco Car Market Growth Slows to 0.9% in August, EVs Reach 17.4%

Casablanca – Morocco’s automotive market recorded 14,979 new vehicle sales in August 2026, up just 0.9% from the 14,851 units recorded in August 2025, according to figures from the Association of Vehicle Importers in Morocco (AIVAM). The result marks the weakest monthly growth rate of 2026.

Passenger vehicles drove the slowdown. Sales fell 2.2% year on year to 12,716 units, marking their first monthly decline of the year. The segment had reached 24,649 units in June before growth slowed to 2.1% in July.

Light commercial vehicles moved in the opposite direction. Sales reached 2,263 units in August, an increase of 22.1% from a year earlier.

Despite the August slowdown, the market maintained strong growth over the first eight months of the year. Total sales reached 167,465 units, up 14.2% from 146,590 during the same period in 2025. Passenger vehicles accounted for 147,603 units, a 13.5% increase, while light commercial vehicles reached 19,862 units, up 19.8%.

AIVAM data also shows a rapid shift toward electrified vehicles (EVs). From January through August, electrified passenger vehicles accounted for 17.4% of registrations, compared with 10.9% during the same period in 2025. The segment reached 25,755 units, an 81% increase in one year.

Plug-in hybrids recorded the strongest growth among the electrified categories, rising 135.1% to 8,144 units. Their market share increased from 2.7% to 5.5%. Mild hybrids rose 58.7% to 4,356 units.

Fully EVs also recorded strong growth. Morocco registered 1,337 battery-electric vehicles through August, up 84.2% from the previous year. Another 1,619 vehicles used range-extender technology, a new category in the Moroccan market that AIVAM says mainly involves Chinese models. Together, BEVs and REEVs represented 2% of passenger vehicle sales.

Chinese brands also expanded their presence. Twenty-one Chinese brands recorded 17,096 passenger vehicle registrations through August, giving them an 11.6% market share compared with 5.4% and 7,080 units a year earlier. That represents growth of 141.5%.

In August alone, Chinese brands reached a record 1,935 passenger vehicle registrations, accounting for 15.2% of the segment and rising 82.7% from August 2025.

AIVAM noted that 2025 set a record for Morocco with 235,372 total registrations, up 33.4% from 2024. The August figures show the 2026 market entering the second half against a much stronger comparison base.
