Additional details have emerged regarding a migrant boat that landed at Fort Zachary Taylor Park in Key West on Thursday.
According to an incident report provided by the Key West Police Department to the Keys Citizen, 11 migrants were detailed after their boat landed on the Key West shoreline just after 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13.
A KWPD spokesperson said 10 men and one woman comprised the group and they are all from Cuba. The migrants were detained and turned over to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, according to KWPD.
The Cuban nationals ranged in age from 22 to 48, according to the police report.
Six of the migrants were “exiting the park at a jogging pace” when local police intercepted them.
President Donald Trump has imposed a U.S. naval blockade on Cuba since January.
That has curtailed fuel shipments to the Caribbean island, aimed at prompting changes from the ruling communist regime or ushering in pro-American leadership in Havana.
Trump also cut off Venezuela fuel and other assistance to Cuba after the U.S. captured and arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and took over the South American country’s oil assets in January.
The U.S. blockade has resulted in fuel shortages and power outages in Cuba, which is already suffering economically from other American-led sanctions.
