Cuban FM: BRICS summit expresses deep concern over impact of US blockade on Cuba

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said on Sunday that
the 18th BRICS Summit adopted a declaration expressing the group’s deep concern
over the situation in Cuba amid the tightening of US blockade measures against
the country and their negative impact on the Cuban economy and energy supplies,
as well as their alarming humanitarian consequences for the Cuban people.

In a post on X, Rodríguez said the summit declaration
renewed its call for an end to the economic, trade and financial measures
imposed on Cuba.

He explained that the document also included a condemnation
and rejection by BRICS countries of the imposition of unilateral coercive
measures that contravene international law, stressing that such measures have
far-reaching negative consequences for human rights, including the right to
development, health and food security, among populations in targeted countries.

He noted that these measures disproportionately affect poor
and vulnerable people, while also contributing to widening the digital divide
and exacerbating environmental challenges.

Rodríguez concluded his post by noting that the summit
declaration called for the removal of these unlawful measures, which undermine
international law and the principles and purposes of the UN Charter.

The development comes amid Washington’s longstanding efforts
to overthrow or weaken the Cuban government. Havana, meanwhile, has accused US
President Donald Trump of seeking to seize the country, its resources and
property and strangle the island’s economy, amid a worsening electricity crisis
and fuel shortages.
