Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — BRICS countries have condemned the imposition of unilateral coercive measures that violate international law, including unilateral economic and secondary sanctions, and called for their removal, according to the New Delhi Declaration adopted at the 18th BRICS Summit.
The document states that such measures have far-reaching negative consequences for human rights in targeted countries, including the right to development, healthcare and food security.
BRICS leaders noted that such restrictions disproportionately affect low-income and vulnerable groups, exacerbate the digital divide and worsen environmental problems.
BRICS reaffirmed its opposition to unilateral coercive measures that contravene international law and the Charter of the United Nations, including sanctions not approved by the UN Security Council.
The declaration stresses that such unlawful measures undermine international law as well as the principles and purposes of the UN Charter.
A separate section of the declaration addresses Cuba. Emphasizing Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace based on mutual respect, the peaceful settlement of disputes and non-interference, BRICS leaders expressed deep concern over the situation surrounding Cuba amid the tightening of unilateral blockade measures against the country.
The document points to the negative impact of these measures on Cuba’s economy, energy supplies and humanitarian situation.
In this context, BRICS countries reaffirmed the need to end economic, trade and financial measures against Cuba in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/80/4.
