Mombasa United turn to former Yanga SC head coach ahead of Premier League debut

The club confirmed Moallin’s arrival through a lavish unveiling video shared across its social media platforms, accompanied by the simple message: “Welcome to Mombasa, Coach Abdulhamid Moallin.”

Moallin immediately assumes responsibility for the team as the ambitious newcomers seek to establish themselves among Kenya’s football elite following their promotion from the National Super League.

He arrives in Mombasa with an impressive coaching résumé built across East Africa, the United States, and the Horn of Africa.

Most recently, he guided Tanzanian giants Young Africans to their record-extending 32nd Tanzania Premier League title after taking charge on an interim basis alongside Patrick Mabedi following the dismissal of Portuguese coach Pedro Gonçalves in May.

Before his stint at Yanga, Moallin served in various coaching roles at Azam FC and KMC in Tanzania, Horseed SC in Somalia, and with the Somalia national team.

He also gained valuable experience in the United States, where he began his coaching journey with Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew SC.

A CAF A Licence holder, Moallin is widely regarded for his tactical discipline and player development, qualities Mombasa United hope will help the club make a successful transition to top-flight football.

He will work alongside returning coach Muhamed Ahmed Mchulla, who rejoins the club from Mathare United, forming a technical bench expected to steer the club through one of the biggest chapters in its history.

Mombasa United earned promotion after finishing third in the 2025/26 National Super League season, securing a place in the top flight for the first time.

With an experienced coach now at the helm and expectations continuing to rise, the Mombasa-based side will be aiming not only to survive in the FKF Premier League but also to lay the foundations for sustained success in Kenyan football.
