Mayor of Tarhuna detained on charges of embezzling public funds

The Public Prosecution has ordered the pretrial detention of the mayor of Tarhuna pending investigation, on charges of embezzling and illegally disposing of public funds.

The Public Prosecution explained that its investigations followed the tracking of the embezzled public funds within the Financial Affairs Department of the Tarhuna Municipal Education Authority.

The investigations revealed that the mayor conspired with the head of the Financial Affairs Department to enable the mayor and his relatives to collect 1.29 million dinars in salaries, despite the absence of any official justifications for such disbursements.

The Public Prosecution also indicated that the accused deliberately and repeatedly disbursed salaries and financial bonuses to two of his relatives without any legal basis.
