LG Electronics Opens Refrigerator Plant in Brazil with 600,000-Unit Annual Capacity, Accelerating Latin America Push — BigGo Finance

LG Electronics (066570) is accelerating its push into the “Global South” with the launch of its second home appliance production base in Brazil, the largest domestic market in Latin America. The strategy aims to lower logistics and manufacturing costs through expanded local production while boosting market dominance by supplying products tailored to Brazilian consumer preferences in a timely manner.

LG Electronics announced on the 16th that it held an opening ceremony for the new plant in Brazil’s Parana state on the 13th (local time) and has begun full-scale production. The Parana plant is the company’s second production base in Brazil, following the Manaus plant in Amazonas state established in 1996, with an annual production capacity of 600,000 refrigerators.

The ceremony was attended by Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior, Governor of Parana, and Song Sung-won, head of LG Electronics’ Latin America regional operations (senior vice president).

The new plant incorporates a wide range of smart factory solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI) and industrial robots. The company has built a monitoring system that uses vision AI for quality inspection and digital twin technology to detect anomalies in production lines in advance. Articulated robots have been deployed in labor-intensive processes such as refrigerator door handling to increase automation. Through these measures, LG expects to improve production efficiency and workplace safety while reducing manufacturing unit costs.

LG Electronics has previously imported some refrigerators produced at its Southeast Asian plants into Brazil. With the Parana plant now operational, the company has established a local production system that reduces logistics costs associated with long-distance shipping and enables faster supply of new products in response to shifting market demand.

The Parana plant will produce products specialized for Brazil’s local environment. Since Brazil’s rated voltage varies by region between 127V and 220V, the company is applying a “bi-voltage” feature that allows a single product to operate on both voltages. The plant also plans to incorporate LED sterilization functions suited to the hot and humid climate, as well as rapid cooling features reflecting the country’s home party culture.

LG Electronics will initially focus on capturing Brazil’s domestic market of more than 210 million people. According to market research firm Mordor Intelligence, Brazil’s home appliance market is projected to expand from $33.6 billion (approximately 47.4 trillion won) in 2026 to $45.3 billion (approximately 64 trillion won) by 2031. The projected compound annual growth rate of 6.12% over this period exceeds the global home appliance market’s average growth rate.

The Parana plant is also slated to serve as an export hub covering all of South America. The plant’s location in southern Brazil offers strong logistics access to major South American countries including Argentina and Uruguay. Brazil’s membership in Mercosur, the South American economic bloc, is another advantage. The company believes that leveraging duty-free trade benefits within the bloc positions the facility as a favorable production and export base for supplying products to neighboring countries over the medium to long term.

The new plant’s launch is an extension of LG Electronics’ recently intensified Global South strategy. The company is pursuing a two-track approach: focusing on premium product sales in developed markets such as North America and Europe, while targeting the mass-market “volume zone” in emerging markets including India, Brazil, and the Middle East.

Growth in key Global South markets is already clearly evident. LG Electronics’ combined revenue from India, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia reached approximately 6.2 trillion won ($4.4 billion) last year, up more than 20% from 2023. That growth rate is more than double the company’s overall revenue growth during the same period.

Baek Seung-tae, head of LG Electronics’ HS Business Division (executive vice president), said: “Building on the expanded production capacity from the new Parana plant, we will ensure stable product supply and introduce home appliances optimized for local customers. We will continue to strengthen our market position by delivering differentiated experiences to customers in Brazil and Latin America.”
