President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday met Sudan’s Darfur Region Governor, General Mini Arko Minnawi, in Juba to discuss efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan and promote renewed political dialogue, according to his office.
In a post on the Office of the President website, the meeting focused on the situation in Sudan, regional stability and prospects for reviving political efforts to end the conflict.
President Kiir reaffirmed South Sudan’s readiness to engage Sudanese stakeholders and use its diplomatic channels to encourage dialogue, reconciliation and a political settlement.
He stressed the close historical, economic and social ties between the two neighboring countries, saying “Peace in Sudan means peace in South Sudan, and peace in South Sudan also means peace in Sudan.”
General Minnawi welcomed South Sudan’s renewed engagement, citing Juba’s geographical proximity and longstanding relationship with Sudan as important factors in regional efforts to restore peace.
Minnawi also disclosed that a Sudanese committee is expected to travel to Juba soon to review the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement.
The planned review will assess progress under the agreement, identify outstanding issues and explore ways of strengthening its implementation amid the ongoing conflict.
South Sudan says its renewed engagement is part of a broader diplomatic effort to encourage dialogue and reconciliation among Sudanese stakeholders.
Juba has previously played a role in Sudanese peace efforts, including facilitating the Juba Peace Agreement, which brought together several Sudanese armed and political movements in an effort to address longstanding conflicts, particularly in Darfur and the Two Areas.
