Iowa National Guard soldiers reunite in Des Moines
Two hundred Iowa National Guard soldiers reunited with their families Saturday after a year-long deployment to the Middle East as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, a counter-terrorism mission in Iraq and Syria.Two welcome home ceremonies were held to celebrate their return. The ceremony in Des Moines took place at the 132nd Air Wing at the Des Moines Airport, while the Council Bluffs ceremony was held at the Council Bluffs Armory this afternoon. Late last year, KCCI spoke with the family of Maj. Josh Dunwoody of Altoona, who shared how they were navigating the holidays without him. Today, they were finally reunited. “I’m super proud of my family. I mean, TAG said it. You can’t do it without the support of your family. None of us would be here. That’s not just a catch line for her ability to cover down on the home front and deal with a lot of those issues, keep the kids involved in school and sports. It’s just incredible. It allows me to stay focused on what I need to do over there,” Dunwoody said. This was the final large group of soldiers to return from their year-long deployment.
