Iraq: Anniversary of the founding of the Kurdistan National Party

Erbil, Iraq – The President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, called on Kurdish political forces on Monday to strengthen unity and joint action to confront current challenges. He also stressed that protecting the constitutional entity of the region and safeguarding the rights of its people are top national priorities at this stage.

This invitation came in a congratulatory message Barzani sent to the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Bafel Talabani, on the anniversary of the party’s founding.

In a statement issued by his office, the President of the Kurdistan Region praised the PUK’s history, describing it as a “key partner” in the national struggle and the political process in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. He also noted the immense sacrifices the party has made throughout its long history, a history crowned by thousands of martyrs.

The need for solidarity and collective action

In his message, Barzani stressed that the current stage requires “shared responsibility” and collective action more than ever before, saying, “Unity and collective action among all political forces and parties have become an urgent necessity to protect the Kurdistan Region and the rights of its citizens, and to ensure the stability of the constitutional entity for which our people have paid a heavy price.” The President of the Region also proudly recalled the legacy of the late President Jalal Talabani, highlighting his pivotal role in the national struggle and in establishing the foundations of Kurdish political action, and emphasizing the importance of remembering his history of struggle as a guiding light for future generations.

Barzani expressed his hope that the anniversary of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s founding would provide a genuine opportunity to solidify the spirit of dialogue and understanding among the various political parties, moving beyond the tensions that could hinder the development process.
