Haiti has scheduled presidential elections for December 13
Haiti’s Electoral Council has scheduled the first round of the presidential and parliamentary elections for December 13, 2026. The second round is set for February 21, 2027, and the final results are expected to be announced on March 7.
According to France 24, the previous schedule called for the first round in August and the second in December, but it was postponed due to security concerns. The Electoral Council emphasized that the new schedule depends on the establishment of an acceptable security environment and the availability of funds to conduct the electoral process.
According to the published schedule, citizens will also vote on constitutional amendments and elect local officials. Earlier, the commission announced the start of voter registration and the training of election security agents, and also released the final list of more than 300 political parties eligible to participate in the upcoming election process.

Haiti has not held elections since 2016. The country’s last president, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated in 2021 after he postponed the vote. The elections are being hampered by violence from armed groups that control most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and have expanded their influence into the country’s central and rural areas.
According to France 24, about 12% of Haiti’s population lives in temporary camps or with host families. The armed groups are largely united under the Viv Ansanm alliance, which the U.S. has designated as a terrorist organization. The alliance is accused of mass kidnappings, rapes, arson, indiscriminate killings, and the illegal trade in weapons, human organs, and drugs.
